Big Brother will return for 21st series in 2024
ITV have today confirmed that Big Brother will return for a 21st series on ITV2 & ITVX in 2024.
Speaking today at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Paul Mortimer, ITV’s commissioning editor confirmed that the network had committed to a second series on the network in 2024 – the broadcaster also confirmed the news in a statement to Big Blagger.
Mortimer went on to say that a number of ITV staffers are Big Brother fans and worked on the show during the Channel 4 years when the show was initially conceived. “I can’t imagine that we are in it just to do two six-week runs across 23 and 24” he added, implying that the broadcaster would be open to extending the current deal beyond 2024.
Pre production for the series is currently underway, with housemates whittled down and a brand new house under construction at Garden Studios.
The broadcaster has promised that the new crop of housemates will come from all walks of life and will not feature “influencer” type housemates, in order to try and recapture the “golden” period for the show.
When asked about the reasoning pushing Big Brother 2023 from a Spring airing to the Autumn, he said that it was a wholly commercial decision due to a downturn in ad revenue in the first half of 2023 – “We have to make money out of our programming. The great thing about programming that is aimed at younger people, is they choose when to watch it” he said.
Finally, the possibility of a new series of Celebrity Big Brother was also raised with Mortimer telling the audience to “watch this space.”
Big Brother returns to ITV2 & ITVX this October.
